  3. The First Internet Hunt

  6. With something on the order of nearly 1.5 million Internet
  7. hosts now connected in "flat information space," there is considerable
  8. research, standardization and commercial activity underway to help
  9. everyone sort through the Matrix.
  10.  
  11. There are also some people creating some fun activities that incent
  12. and teach teach users, and at the same time demonstrate the enormous
  13. and varied distributed information on the Internet.  A few weeks ago,
  14. Rick Gates, Director of Library Automation at the University of California,
  15. Santa Barbara, Library <lb05gate@ucsbuxa.ucsb.edu>, announced the winner
  16. of the First Internet Hunt held in September.  Rick has provided
  17. Internet Society News with the following details.

  19. Hope N. Tillman, Director of Libraries at Babson College submitted the
  20. highest scoring entry.  Rick says that the Internet Hunt has met with such 
  21. enthusiasm it is now a monthly occurrence, and currently archived at an FTP 
  22. site at the Coalition for Networked Information
  23. (<ftp.cni.org>  /pub/net-guides/i-hunt).

  25. In announcing the results, the methods used in arriving at the answers
  26. are also published.  Preference is given to answers that can be solved
  27. immediately using the Net.  The questions posed for the first Hunt are
  28. listed below, together with the winning answers.  Alternative answers
  29. are possible, but these were the best.  In announcing the winner, Rick
  30. also announces many of the alternative answers.  Together, they represent
  31. a really useful portrayal of Internet discovery tools and techniques.

  56.     Access CARL (pac.carl.org).  The Directory of Environmental
  57.     Education Resources (DEER) is a joint project of Colorado
  58.     Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE) and Colorado
  59.     Dept. of Education, as a service from Pikes Peak Library
  60.     District. At Pikes Peak Lib. District menu go to #3 for
  61.     Encyclopedias, Business and Reference (sources including
  62.     DEER).  DEER is 26. If you browse by title you will see an
  63.     alphabetical list of programs focused on environmental ed.

  65. 4. My wife just got a job at the University of North
  66. Carolina.  My specialty is computer/data processing work.  Where
  67. can I find a list of jobs in that area of the state?

  69.     North Carolina State University's CWIS, "Happenings," has a
  70.     menu item, "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs," which contains the listings of
  71.     vacancies posted by the North Carolina Office of State
  72.     Personnel Vacancies.  Category #5 is entitled "Data
  73.     Processing."  Beyond that, the CWISes of the University of
  74.     North Carolina at Asheville, at Chapel Hill, at Greensboro,
  75.     and at Wilmington also provide job listings.

  78. the University of Nevada at Las Vegas hold?

  80.     There are two copies in special collections at the Univ. of
  81.     Nevada at Las Vegas.  I couldn't get in through UNLV but did
  82.     get in through Reno and found access to Southern Nevada which
  83.     enabled me to look up Las Vegas.

  86. year.  Where can I find the text of it?

  104. libsoft.  How do I get ahold of this software?
